Jennifer Brou
I draw to prolong quiet moments, explore fading and flickering light, and grasp the vastness of empty space. When drawing shadows, I tune into the quiet, sometimes overlookable, moments when light interacts with my everyday environment. Shadows reveal what is both there and what is absent.
In my Cold Air & Empty Space drawings, space is explored through marks meant to capture the emptiness that surrounds natural forms, most often the silhouettes of trees. The works are drawn at a small, intimate scale using graphite on a translucent ground and white ink on black paper. My process is slow and methodical. The repetitive marks are a meditation on time and space. I shift mediums and subjects with the seasons as a way to stay in tune with the world around me and appreciate the subtleties of everyday beauty.
