Rachel Katz
This series of drawings began as an attempt to explore ideas of the gap, referenced by several early aviators when they wrote about their experiences in the air. The gap, or new space that opened for them, was free of time and direction. Worry disappeared, awareness was heightened, comfort and safety settled on them, at least momentarily. I wondered what that space could look and feel like and how a space of intense unknowingness could be comfortable and safe?
I imagine these drawings as atmosphere, and light as color. Applying layers of colored pencil is simple yet time consuming, but results in space for contemplation in making and viewing.
